The sad part of this cookoff was that it was the last one that Jeff Downer would be able to attend for at least a year, as he is in Boston for photography as of the 23rd. Thus, he wanted to host and of course compete before leaving town. Also notable that Iain was finally in town and not busy on cookoff night, and was thrilled to be able to attend. The wine was flowing and everyone was in good holiday spirits.

COMPETITORS AND ENTRIES
Nina: "please your beans with beets" bean & mushroom sauté with beet-cashew butter and spinach-oregano tofu cream, topped with sesame seeds & parsley

Laryssa: "Christmas in Japan" red rice (beet-dyed) sushi with asparagus, yam & beet served on a bed of wasabi avocado

Jen: "pesto change-o" campari tomato halves topped with pesto, mozza, and onions & mushrooms fried in port

Tim: "that's my rich substance!" cilantro polenta with red bean tomato sauce, fried green onion, and cilantro lime zest

Malloreigh: "gnocchi di rosso e verde della inverno" beet and basil gnocchi with roasted tomato sauce, button mushrooms, and basil chiffonade garnish

Jeff D: "Pacman piroshki" beet buns stuffed with potato, carrot, sage & leek, served with a dill-lemon mayo dipping sauce

Justine: "stoplight pudding" chocolate pudding with cherries and mint

Amanda: "triangle tiredness" chocolate cranberry tarts with basil, almond, and sea salt in a gluten-free pastry

Justine competed for the first time. Definitely one of the nicer kitchens most of us have had the chance to use for cookoff purposes. Her husband Frederic was quite hospitable as well, gathering dishes, pouring wine for everyone, making sure we could find things we needed. We had a fair number of people in the house, too, 17 or 18 I think, and more than enough wine to make sure everyone was very happy.

COMPETITORS AND ENTRIES
Amanda: "Chinese garden in spring" oolong-smoked tofu and steeped dandelion greens in a sweet broth with candied tea leaves and orange rind

Jen: "AHH! balsamic if it's too sweet). Re-whisk it before using.

crème fraîche:
-1/2 cup tofu sour cream
-2 tbsp soy creamer
-1-2 tbsp soy cream cheese
-1 tbsp agave nectar
-1 tsp lemon juice
-1/2 tsp arrowroot powder

Whisk the creamer, lemon juice, and arrowroot powder together, then add everything else. If it's too runny, add a bit more cream cheese. If it's too thick, add a bit more creamer. Refrigerate the mixture at least half an hour, and re-whisk it before using.

Slice all the peaches in half lengthwise and remove the stone. Generously brush the glaze over all sides and place them face-down on a hot grill. Grill them about 10 minutes, until they are warm throughout and relatively soft. After taking them off the grill, brush them again with glaze and put about a tablespoon of the crème fraîche in each hole from the stone. Sprinkle with lemon zest and chopped sage and add the garnish leaf.
These can be served as a dessert, but I think they would also be good as a side for a spicy or smoky protein dish.

#24: barbecue - July 2011

BBQ cookoff was held on the 12th of June at Nina's beautiful house in Mt. Pleasant. We had two grills set up so that it wouldn't take all night to cook everything, and sat at the big wooden table on the deck. It was clear and warm until after 10, when it started raining lightly, but we had all finished serving by then. There were a number of attendants who were not competing, so the booze was plentiful: two giant bottles of red wine plus a case of beer and a giant bottle of champagne! Nina and Mart made several bowls of delicious sangria and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. Mix together the following (this will obviously make a little more than you need for the sauce, but extra isn't a bad thing):
-2 tbsp yellow or dijon mustard
-1 tbsp Veganaise
-1 clove of garlic, pressed
-a pinch each of turmeric and garlic salt

Mix together everything but the water, and taste it to make sure it's spiced to your tastes (if it's too spicy, add a bit more tahini and olive oil). Then add water until it reaches the consistency you want. This is good as a sandwich spread, dip, or topping for stir-fry, etc. Enjoy!

#23: the bean - June 2011

The bean cookoff was held on the 14th of June, again at Flatland — now residence of Amanda and Laryssa as well as Jeff Downer. An impressive 11 people brought entries, and many others came along for the ride. It was a happy, loud, and drunken affair, but that was to be expected with so much communal wine and the fact that a good number of us had not seen each other in at least a month. I think also with the sun setting so late it was pretty easy to lose track of time, because it was nearly 12:30 when Jeff Z and I finally headed home, and we weren't even the last to leave.

COMPETITORS AND ENTRIES
Bronwen: When someone commented on how bare the walls were in the dining area of the kitchen, Jeff said that the room never gets used, so we dragged the couch in from the other room and made a point of using it. It was a cosy affair with plenty of beer & wine and only a few entries, which made it feel a little like a prix fixé menu that we could all enjoy without having to worry about how uncomfortably full we would be by the end.

COMPETITORS AND ENTRIES
Amanda: "Roman Hands, Thrussian Fingers" borscht with lemongrass, galangal and baby corn, served with piroshki filled with cilantro (Thai-Russian)

Jeff D: "small town sushi" cheeseburger sushi with all the fixins, including fries and onions rings (American-Japanese)

Malloreigh: "Brezhnev's 9-year-itch" qorma, borscht, horseradish-dill sour cream, served with buckwheat pancakes, otherwise known as blini (Afghan-Russian)

Jen: "drunken tourists" Polenta rounds with a red onion & watercress salad in a whiskey-mustard dill dressing, topped with smoked tofu sautéed in Guinness (British-Italian)

Jeff Z: "mi vietnamita es terrible" lettuce wrap with a bean, salsa & veggie stir-fry, sushi rice, cheese, and cilantro cream (Vietnamese-Mexican)

Arinn: "the kilted Aztec" spicy chocolate shortbread with cayenne icing sugar (Mexican-Scottish)

It should be noted that Arinn flew from Calgary the same day, and her entry was made in Calgary the night before and brought in her carry-on. We all agreed that it was better to not buy into a commercialistic holiday and instead spend it celebrating our love of food, booze, and each other. Dates were changed numerous times, people complained about not being able to make certain dates, and in trying to please everyone, Malloreigh gave up and passed the helm over to Laryssa. I'm writing about this despite not being in attendance in order to try and get the blog caught up, so if someone wants to post the details please do so. Apparently the food was of course good but the event was tainted with all the frustrations of trying to organise it. We agreed that in the future dates must be chosen at the end of the cookoff prior, and if a couple of people can't make it, them's the breaks.

No cookoff was held in February because of the Olympic shenanigans forcing people to be extra busy, or working graveyard shifts, or out of town; we instead opted to have two in March.

#10: Christmas baking - December 2009

Bake-off was held in late December at Britt's house. It was her first time competing.

If you have a better record/memory of this event, please edit this entry accordingly.

#9: comfort food - November 2009

We opted not to have a cookoff in October and instead had a non-competitive vegan Thanksgiving dinner at the Treehouse. Other Cookoffers are welcome to contribute!

The best part about this cookoff for the hosts at the House of God was that we were privileged to keep all of the leftovers (though there weren't many). We were moving the next day so this food came in quite handy.

#3: pie - March 2009

Our third cookoff was held in March of 2009 and was supposed to be specifically fruit pies, but a few people missed the memo. This was held in the attic suite of Yaara's old place on 12th Ave.

Competitors were:
Laryssa, with a coconut lemon cream pie
Yaara, with a bosc pear pie with a whole wheat crust
Jen, with an apple and swiss chard pie (it was supposed to be rhubarb which is apparently hard to find in March)
Jeff Z, with a bourbon peach pie
Jeff D, with a chocolate avocado pie with almonds
Amanda C, with a strawberry rosewater pie with a lemon poppyseed crust
Amanda K, with a peach mango pie
Keri, with a chocolate banana coconut pie
Jade, with a chocolate almond tofu pie

I believe this is when we started getting really crazy with the categorization, too, so our overall winner was Amanda C, but we had a separate category for people who had never made a pie before, and Jen was the winner there with the pie of failure that turned out to be delicious.

Also in attendance were Malloreigh, Dave, and Nina. We all got nicely sauced on Baby Duck and went into sugar-induced comas, writing haikus on the typewriter. This cookoff was without our official poster-size chart of entries and was instead recorded on a typewriter, so this is all based on memory and photos.
I was going to post the family portrait of us and our pies, but the blog is not wide enough to view it, and I am not proficient enough with html to make it so.

#2: chili - February 2009

our second cookoff was chili. it was the first cookoff we scored. it took place in february, 2009.

the participants were amanda, laryssa, keri, malloreigh, and yaara. jeff zipp and jen clark attended for their first times.

keri made a chocolate chili that blew all our tops off and won the competition. keri doesn't even like chocolate! sneak attack. amanda's chili was a smoky tempeh chili and it was truly delicious. laryssa made a fruity chocolatey chili. yaara made a simple bean chili. malloreigh made a curry chili and everyone told her it "wasn't really a chili" even though it had beans and chilies, which is what a chili is, anyway.

this is all iirc, btw, fyi.

#1: Lasagna - January 2009

Our first cookoff was held in January, 2009. It came about because Keri made lasagna one night and Malloreigh wanted to prove that she, too, could make lasagna, though she never had. Amanda and Yaara participated as well, each making their own version of lasagna. There was no scoring, and Sam made a salad to go along with the entrees, which has not been practiced since.
